Since 2003, Step One Halfway House has been committed to walking alongside people who lost so much of who they were and the ability to achieve their life goals and dreams due to addiction and who desperately want and need help to recover. Step One’s mission is to introduce a 12-Step program to a newly sober individual in a clean, safe environment (the agency also helps those who are not yet sober.)
Step One One Halfway House is a recovery home for adult males with substance abuse problems, mental health issues and alcoholics that desire a new way of living. We serve the weakest among us; the helpless and homeless, the forgotten and those who fall through the cracks. Each client must have the willingness to make a commitment to change their lives. We realize that this can be a scary step for some of us to make. Our staff is committed to helping every client overcome that fear while taking this first step.
Once approved to participate, new clients, engage in structured programming to help them attain and/or maintain sobriety. Everyone must sign up for, and complete, a 90-day 12 Step program of their choice, like Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), Cocaine Anonymous (CA), Narcotics Anonymous (NA), and Crystal Meth Anonymous (CMA). Each week they receive a meeting slip with seven rows for every day of the week. During the first 90 days (about 3 months), they must attend at least one daily 12-Step meeting. This strategy often is referred to as the “90/90 Method,” as it is based on attending 90 meetings in 90 days (about 3 months). Many similar organizations also use this method.
Within their first two weeks, all new clients must secure a “Sponsor” for their 12-Step program and determine their Home Group Meeting. A sponsor is someone else who has completed a certain number of steps and now is helping new program attendees. It is not difficult to find a sponsor as, during every 12-Step program meeting, the Chair asks if anyone needs, or wishes to serve as, a sponsor. Within this same timeframe, they also must determine their “Home Group Meeting,” or the meeting they most enjoy and identify with and make a weekly service commitment to the community or their home group. Each Home Group Meeting is chaired by different people, utilizes different formats or layouts, and covers a variety of topics.
Step One Halfway House also offers a Peer Support Program to increase retention, program graduation rates, and evaluate clients’ progress more extensively. As part of the program, all new clients must do a meet and greet with the on-site Peer Support Counselor within their first week. This ensures they know that the specialist is available when they need to talk so that they do not need to find someone off campus. In addition to assisting clients, the Peer Support Counselor also regularly contacts their sponsors to ensure accountability. If a sponsor is not meeting and working with a client, the Counselor has the client choose a new one so they can complete, and graduate from, the program.
